A bit about me

Curious about technology. Interested in people.

I'm Hjalte Daniel Retz Johansson. My work lives somewhere between the technical and the commercial — but my starting point is usually a person, a question, or a problem worth understanding.

A little curiosity goes a long way.

It started with a website.

I built my first website when I was eight. I liked making something that someone else could use, and I wanted to know how it worked underneath.

That eventually led to a Professional Bachelor's degree in Web Development at UCL in Odense. It also left me with a habit I still have: reading the documentation, asking another question, and trying things out for myself.

Learning from both sides of the screen.

At Umbraco, I moved from software support into presales, technical sales and team leadership. I worked with developers, sales teams, partners and customers — sometimes in the same conversation, with very different questions on the table.

Support taught me to listen before offering an answer. Presales taught me to connect the technical detail to why it matters. Leading teams taught me that a useful process needs more than a document: people need context, practice and a reason to use it.

I also spent time in Charlotte, North Carolina, helping build Umbraco's US team. Working across countries sharpened my appreciation for clear communication and for the assumptions we don't always notice we're making.

Today, I work at Relewise, where search, recommendations and personalisation bring those technical and commercial perspectives together in commerce.

Technology has to earn its place.

I enjoy a good API. I enjoy a well-built system. But what interests me most is what changes for the people using it.

I've worked on CRM automation to make follow-up more consistent, and on introducing tools alongside coaching, shared standards and adoption routines. Those experiences made me care about the whole change, rather than just the installation.

My approach is straightforward: understand the workflow, make the choices explicit, build something useful, and pay attention to what happens afterwards. Sometimes that involves AI. Sometimes it involves removing an unnecessary step.

The Social Democrat is part of the picture, too.

I'm a Social Democrat. From 2018 to 2021, I served on Odense City Council for the Danish Social Democratic Party, including work on the Children and Youth Committee.

It was a different setting from software, but listening, explaining difficult choices and working across disagreements mattered there, too. That experience is part of how I think about responsibility and collaboration.

I don't separate that part of my history from the rest of me. You get the whole person.

Away from the screen.

I live in Kværndrup on Funen, Denmark. I'm also an unapologetic hockey fan.

As a child, I played hockey and went to see the Odense Bulldogs. In Charlotte, I became a regular at Charlotte Checkers games and got to see the Carolina Hurricanes play in the NHL — a childhood dream, twice over.

I like the energy, the teamwork, and the moment a game suddenly opens up. It's a good reminder that not everything worth caring about happens at a desk.
